Precautions for Using a Chainsaw

Release Date: 2025-12-24

Summary: Please check the chain tension regularly. When inspecting and adjusting, be sure to shut off the engine and wear protective gloves. The chain is properly tensioned when it can be easily pulled by hand while hanging on the lower part of the guide bar.

  1. Regularly check the chain tension. Before inspection and adjustment, turn off the engine and wear protective gloves. The chain is properly tensioned when it can be easily pulled by hand while hanging on the lower part of the guide bar.

  2. A small amount of oil must always be visible on the chain. Before each use, check the saw chain lubrication and the oil level in the lubricant tank. Never operate the machine without proper chain lubrication; using a dry chain can result in damage to the cutting assembly.

  3. Never use used engine oil. Used oil cannot meet lubrication requirements and is unsuitable for chain lubrication.

  4. If the oil level in the tank does not drop, a malfunction in the lubrication delivery system may be the cause. Inspect the chain lubrication and the oil circuit. Contaminated filter screens can also result in inadequate lubricant supply. Clean or replace the lubricant filters installed in the pipelines connecting the tank to the pump.

  5. After installing a new chain, allow it to run-in for 2 to 3 minutes. Once the break-in period is complete, check the chain tension and adjust it if necessary. A new chain requires more frequent tensioning than one that has already been used for some time. When cold, the chain should lie snug against the lower guide bar, yet still be able to move freely along the upper guide bar with your hand. If needed, re‑tighten the chain. At operating temperature, the chain will expand slightly and sag; the drive link at the bottom of the guide bar must remain securely seated in the chain groove—otherwise, the chain may skip or come off, necessitating another tension adjustment.

  6. After operation, the chain must be properly slackened. As it cools, the chain will contract; if left overly tensioned, it can damage the crankshaft and bearings. Conversely, if the chain is tightened while in operation, it will contract upon cooling, and excessive tension can also harm the crankshaft and bearings.
